8 Things to Do When Feeling Lonely

Loneliness is one’s emotional response to isolation or lack of companionship.  However, it can also be felt even when surrounded by other people.  It is normal to be in this kind of emotional state but too much loneliness can be unhealthy.  In fact, it can be a symptom of a psychological problem such as chronic depression.

Don’t dwell on loneliness for too long.  Lift yourself up or seek help from others.  In this article, I will discuss a few creative and unique ways to deal with loneliness.

Identify what causes you to feel lonely.

First things first, sit down and reflect on what really makes you feel this way.  The first step to finding a solution is to identify the problem.  Is it your work? Your friends? Your family?  Ask yourself these questions and start from there.

Go on a solo date.

I know that it seems ironic but sometimes, even if you feel lonely you still want to be just by yourself.  But that doesn’t mean that you should just stay at home and sulk.  You can be alone while having fun too.  So go and have a solo date – watch a movie, eat out, go shopping or pamper yourself.  There are a lot of things to do.

Be with friends and family more often.

Now, if you want to be surrounded with people – reach out to your family and friends more often.  Invite them out or visit them more.  If you don’t feel like leaving home, talking to them through social media is also a great idea.

Find a new hobby.

Learning something new is one of the best distractions when feeling lonely.  Enroll in a class or just start a new hobby at your own home.  Practice your cooking skills, try your luck in crafts or start redecorating your house.

Volunteer or do charity works.

It is impossible to feel lonely when you are helping those who are in need.  Visit orphanages and nursing homes or feed the homeless.  When you see them smiling, all your sad thoughts will surely fade away.

Be Active

Being physical active is scientifically proven to lift your mood and make you happier.  So grab your running shoes and start your morning with a quick jog.  Aside from running, you can also do other activities like swimming, dancing or going to the gym.

Get a pet

Having a cute pet beside you 24/7 will never make you lonely.  Their playfulness will make you forget about your worries and they will surely cheer you up.  Their unconditional love is amazing too.

Planning a vacation is pretty exciting.  It can lift your mood and spirits up and steer your mind off of negativity.  Plan it out with your friends and if you are brave enough, go and travel solo.
