5 Steps to Have a Healthy Relationship with Yourself

There’s an assortment of articles in this blog, talking about how to build, improve and restore relationships with your partners, children, friends and other loved ones, but not a lot about having a healthy relationship with yourself.

People may come and go but your relationship with yourself is constant.  It influences your personality, as well as the relationships you have with other people.

So in today’s article, let’s focus on ourselves. Here are 5 steps to nourish a healthy relationship with oneself, for a better and happier life and well-being.

1. Begin with Self-Acceptance.

Self-acceptance is the key to building a good relationship with yourself, and the lack thereof makes one unhappy, depressed, insecure, constantly judging yourself and all sorts of negativities.  If you want others to love you, you need to learn how to love yourself first.  And self-love begins with self-acceptance.  Learn to accept who you are, the body you have and the fact that everyone is different.  If you wish to change, do it to improve yourself, not for others or as a way to fit in.

2. Embrace your failures.

Part of accepting yourself is to embrace your quirks and failures.  Don’t let these failures bring you down and hate yourself. You tried, you failed but you learned.  So what?  We’re not perfect human beings.  Look at these as challenges and opportunities to learn something new.

3. Maintain Self-Care.

Taking care of yourself is a very important foundation for nourishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself.  Do something you love, do things that make you feel great.  Pamper yourself from time to time, sleep well, eat healthy nutritious foods, exercise regularly, pursue a hobby, listen to feel-good music, etc.  Basically anything that will feed your soul and improve how you feel about yourself.

4. Be kind to yourself.

While being there and being kind to others is important, keep in mind that you also have to be kind to yourself.  Treat yourself like how you should treat others, with respect, compassion and a kind heart.

5. Become Self-Aware.

Self-awareness is recognizing your personality, strengths, weaknesses, emotions, etc.  It allows you to understand yourself more – your feelings, your attitude and how others perceive you.  Being self-aware is important not just for building healthy relationships with yourself, but with others too.  This also plays a huge part in creating the life that you want and building success.

You can do this through journaling, meditating and just constantly taking time to review your day, your life and your surroundings.

If you feel like your life and your relationships are a currently in a mess, take time to evaluate yourself. Remember, a happy life and the best relationships, begin with a healthy relationship with oneself.
